Our masons’ approach to fireplaces & fire pits
A fireplace that smokes into the room is almost always a draft problem rather than a wood problem — smoke chamber shape, flue size relative to the opening, or an obstruction. Those are diagnosable and usually fixable, and it is worth doing before assuming the fireplace is unusable.
Outdoor fireplaces are foundations first. A structure of that weight needs a proper footing below frost depth, and building one on a patio slab is how they crack away from the house within a few winters.

Building a Brick Fire Pit That Lasts in Nashville
Most brick fire pits that crack and crumble were built like a garden wall with a fire in it. The inside, the base and where it sits decide how long one lasts.

FAQ
Homeowners’ questions about fireplaces & fire pits
Does an outdoor fireplace need a foundation?
Yes. A masonry fireplace is heavy, and on Middle Tennessee clay it needs a footing below frost depth or it settles and cracks. A fire pit is lighter and sits on a gravel base. A fireplace also needs a proper firebox and a flue sized to draw, because a fireplace that was stacked to look right rather than built to burn smokes into the seating.
Gas or wood for an outdoor fireplace or fire pit?
Wood for the smell, the sound and the cost of the fuel; gas for convenience, no smoke and a fire at the flick of a switch — and gas is not subject to the open-burning restrictions that Metro and most counties apply to wood fires. Many people choose gas for a fire pit and wood for a fireplace. The gas line is run by a licensed plumber.
