Our masons’ approach to stone walls & steps
Retaining walls fail because of water rather than weight. Saturated Middle Tennessee clay behind a wall exerts far more pressure than the soil alone, and the drainage behind the wall is what relieves it. A wall built without it will lean whatever it is built from.
Stone steps need consistent rise across the flight. Natural stone tempts people into varying it because the material varies, and inconsistent risers on an outdoor flight are exactly where people fall.

FAQ
Homeowners’ questions about stone walls & steps
Block, brick or natural stone for a garden wall?
Segmental block for a retaining wall that has to hold soil — it is engineered for it and it drains. Brick for a wall that matches the house. Natural stone for a wall that is the feature. A brick or stone wall that retains soil is built on a block or concrete core with the brick or stone as the face. All of them need drainage behind them, or they lean.
Why do masonry steps crack and separate?
They settled, or water got in. Steps built on fill dirt beside the house sink as it compacts; steps with failed joints take water that freezes and pushes them apart. Rebuilt on a proper footing with the joints pointed and the top sloped to shed water, they stay put. Handrail posts are set into the masonry rather than drilled in afterwards.
