Our masons’ approach to stone & veneer

Manufactured stone veneer fails when the water management behind it is wrong. It needs a weather-resistive barrier, lath, a scratch coat and a weep screed at the bottom so water that gets behind it can escape. Stone laid straight onto sheathing traps water against the wall.

Blending is what makes stonework look natural. Stone laid straight out of the pallet produces obvious color banding, and mixing from several pallets as the wall goes up is the difference between a wall that looks quarried and one that looks ordered.

FAQ

Homeowners’ questions about stone & veneer

Natural stone or manufactured stone veneer?

Natural stone for a wall that will be looked at closely and is meant to last a century; manufactured veneer for a broader budget, a lighter weight, and a consistent look. Manufactured stone has improved a great deal and most people cannot tell at a distance. Either one fails if the moisture barrier, the lath and the flashing behind it are wrong, and that is where the skill is.

Can stone veneer be added to an existing house?

Yes, to a foundation, a column, a chimney or a facade. It is installed over a weather barrier and metal lath with a scratch coat, and the details at the bottom, the windows and the roofline are what keep water out of the wall behind it. A veneer job that leaks is one that was stuck on without those layers.
