Our masons’ approach to brick repair & tuckpointing
Mortar specification is the single most important decision in brick repair, and getting it wrong is irreversible. Historic brick is softer than modern Portland mortar, the joint is meant to be the sacrificial element, and repointing old brick with hard mortar pushes the damage into the brick faces instead.
Stair-step cracking through the joints usually means movement below rather than a mortar failure. Repointing it without finding out why the wall moved means the same crack reappears in the new mortar, so the diagnosis comes first.

Why Mortar Fails Before the Brick Does
Mortar is designed to fail before the brick. Repointing with modern cement mix on a soft old brick reverses that, and the brick pays.

FAQ
Homeowners’ questions about brick repair & tuckpointing
What is tuckpointing, and does my brick need it?
Grinding out mortar joints that have cracked, crumbled or washed out and repointing them with new mortar. If you can scrape mortar out of a joint with a key, or there are gaps where the mortar was, it needs doing. Failed joints let water into the wall, and in a Middle Tennessee winter that water freezes and breaks the brick. Done early it is a small job; done late it is replacement.
Can spalled or damaged bricks be replaced to match?
Yes, and matching is the skill. Old brick is sourced from salvage or matched by color and texture, and the mortar is matched too — a soft lime mortar on an old house, a modern mortar on a new one. Repointing an old wall with a hard modern mortar is a common mistake that makes the brick spall faster.
